PER CAPITA

An overview of Per Capita and a brief history:

Paying Per Capita is similar to contributing one’s dish to a potluck meal, paying to be connected to the Internet, paying for the benefit of utilities, such as electricity, water, and the telephone, and pitching in with other passengers to pay for gasoline on a road trip.

The earliest mention of something like per capita apportionment dates back to the 1700s. In the mid-1800s, a plan of mileage was adopted by the General Assembly to defray the expenses of commissioners attending General Assembly meetings so that everyone could be present to participate regardless of distance or financial resources. Over time, per capita has been used to fund ecclesiastical and administrative functions that are shared by the whole church. In 1995, the following definition was developed:

Per capita is an opportunity for all communicant members of the Presbyterian church through the governing bodies to participate equally, responsibly, and interdependently by sharing the cost of coordination and evaluation of mission; and of performing ecclesiastical, legislative, and judicial functions that identify a Reformed Church, while at the same time strengthening the sense of community among all Presbyterians. (General Assembly minutes, Part I, 1995)

Per Capita for First Presbyterian Church in Maysville is $33.83 per member for 2014. Please put on the memo line of your check that you wish to designate it for per capita when making your payment.

ALWAYS REFORMING

The Latin phrase Ecclesia semper reformanda est means The church is always reforming; implied is And that is good!

Ongoing change and growth are important for individuals, too, but for many of us, change is hard. Use this prayer poem to embrace positive change, safe in the arms of our unchanging God.

Cradle to grave –

How shall my life flow?

Always the same,

Never daring to grow? Since

God is the same, always faithful and near,

I’m free to move forward in spite of my fear. So…

Naming the Lord as my Power through strife, I

Go forth braving newness – in faith and in life!

Jesus reminds us to feed the hungry and give to the poor, who it seems we will always have with us. Did you know that 70% of all children in the Mason County School District are on a reduced or free lunch plan? Two years ago, the BackPack Program fed 40 kids (40 backpacks were filled each week). Now, the need has increased threefold: 120 backpacks are filled every Friday to tide over 120 hungry kids before they can come to school for a nutritious meal again. The Mason County Food Bank informed us that they used to get between 4 and 7 requests for assistance each day – one day last week they received 28 requests for food assistance! They are close to getting 20 requests daily. Please – the need is so great – continue to be generous, and bring in donations to the BackPack Program, the Mason County Food Bank, and toiletries for the Women’s Crisis Center.Place yourdonation in the baskets in the Fellowship Hall. Thank you!

Backpack Program of Mason County
School is getting ready to start again, so remember to continue to give to this important program. Over 100 children are served every Friday. These snacks help sustain the children over the weekend when many would not have enough to eat otherwise. If you wish to donate food items directly to the Backpack Program, a basket is in the Fellowship Hall.

The following items may be donated: pudding cups, oatmeal cookies, small boxes of cereal, fruit chews/rollups, boxes of raisins, individual applesauce and fruit cups, boxed drinks, and granola bars with no peanut butter. Please include nothing with peanut butter!

If you wish to donate a check, make it payable to the First Presbyterian Church and note Backpack on the memo line of your check.
